Gameplay
Species: Frog
Gimmick:
- Tote starts with 40 more
HP than most characters and (currently) faces weaker enemies.
- Tote is unable to get normal Weapons, Shields and Armor, as well as some Accessories and Consumables.
Carvings! The vast majority of Tote's itempool, Carvings aren't added directly into your backpack. Instead, they act like cards in a deck. Replace normal combat rewards with a selection of 3 carvings. At start of combat, and each turn, up to 5 carvings are
drawn. Each carving must be placed on the backpack directly to be played, and have their own separate summon and use cost. All unplayed carvings at end of turn are shuffled into the
discard pile. If the draw pile is empty, shuffle all carvings in the
discard pile into the draw pile.
- Toss: 1
Energy Cost. Upon Toss,
discard all remaining carvings from your backpack, and deal 1
Projectile
Damage for each carving to the target.
- Special carving chest and shopkeeper, the latter having the option of
destroying any undesirable carvings, at a cost of 5 base
gold, plus 5 more for each removal.
Carving Mechanics
Draw: Some carvings, such as Pot Carving, allow more cards to be obtained in the same turn.
Discard: Certain carvings, such as Daughter's Blade, discard themselves upon
use.
Banish: The least common of carving states, carvings that are banished (such as Sadness) are removed from combat, unable to be drawn again until combat end.
Tote Exclusive Items
In addition to the normal item types carvings can have, unique subtypes of carvings exist, having various synergies with themselves as well as other items.
- Kin: Carvings that have direct synergy when summoned or used adjacent to each other, such as Mother's Blade using adjacent kin on summon.
- Sap: 0
Energy cost 1x1 Carvings that don't have any special effects when summoned but
connecting 3 or more saps together triggers a special effect followed by a
discard, such as Vine Sap adding 1
Dodge to self.
- Plant: These carvings incur both a turn start benefit such as
Haste and
Rage, as well as a stronger effect followed by
discard when adjacent Consumables are
used. Not only items such as Cleansing Bomb can trigger this effect, but other carvings as well, such as Mossy Carving and Toadstool Sword.
Tips
- Compared to every other character, Tote is by far the most unique character in terms of gameplay. Instead of building a consistent layout, Tote's goal is to build a deck that can best synergize with itself on a wim, either by carrying each tool for any possible task, or by thinning the deck of any lackluster carving.
- While lacking consistency, Tote's Carvings for the most part bag more
Damage and
Block than their normal counterparts, and are generally more powerful.
- Like other items, Carvings are able to be selected in any Event requiring an item, effectively allowing Tote to thin her deck for free.
- While Toss is a powerful character ability, the lack of discrimination between carvings
discarded can be an issue if depending on the placement and consistent use of a certain carving. Do not be afraid of carrying selective
discard or
banish options.
- Tote is a notably
Gold starved character, due to not only being unable to sell carvings, but actively needing money to dispose of them. Consider carrying extra income sources such as Piggy Bank.
Lore
Tote comes from the Enchanted Swamp, a land in the South of Orderia. Like many of her kind, she spent her youth fascinated by the magic emanating from the Mother Tree deep within the dungeon, and her saplings scattered throughout the swamp. Living in the secluded capital city of Lilymist, Tote grew isolated from the outside world. She spent a peaceful childhood studying magic and was eventually enrolled in the prestigious College of the Dreaming, which housed the Mother Tree's first sapling - the Dreaming Tree.
The Dreaming Tree is said to be a direct line of communication to the Mother Tree herself and to be the ruler of its own realm known as the Dreaming. By communing with the trees, amphibians may begin their learning of magic without the use of mana stones. This is where Tote’s magical journey began. She was, and still is, a swift learner, quickly rising to the top of her class! In just a few short years she was prepared for her final research project and she would be deemed a full fledged mage of the swamp - a feat that for many can take a decade of studying.
She was preparing her final project when she heard a call for help. A call directly from the Dreaming Tree. A cry for its mother. Tote followed the call that pierced her very being. Through Lilymist and into a hidden entrance to the dungeon, she followed its corridors until it opened up into an underground grove. There she witnessed key members of the college defiling the Dreaming Tree's roots, tainting sap and writing dark sigils across the bark! The tree was being injured not only physically but also spiritually! Tote let out a yelp of surprise, alerting one of the members of this dark party - one of her Professors…
Knowing that she found herself in danger, Tote took off down the hallway towards the surface. As she escaped, spells whizzed past her head. She dodged them the best she could until eventually she was hit. Falling to the ground with a thud, Tote laid in a daze. Her former mentor approached her looking rueful. He had always liked her, but she was too much of a goody-two-shoes and wouldn’t understand his methods for gaining power. He began chanting a final spell to get rid of her, when suddenly a root burst from the ground, knocking him off his feet. The teacher's spell misfired and Tote was able to regain her senses and bolt up. Then she saw a bag hanging from a root. A bag imbued with the Dreaming Tree’s essence. She felt the urge to grab it and run. Following Dreaming Tree’s directions, she headed towards Oakshire Forest to look for Mother Tree.
History
- Originally, Tote could find weapons and the other normal items; she only had a hand size of three, and she could only find carvings in special carving chests (like CR-8's component chests) or frog merchants.
- In an update, to encourage use of carvings, Tote's levels then gave illusory spaces; spaces that could only hold carvings, and later, manastones.
